| Had a guy send me some mink carcasses so I was cutting the glands off of them. I think I like the smell of mink. Its kind of like that real mild, mild smell of skunk on a summer evening breeze. Too much and its distasteful . . . but just a faint whiff is nice. | |

| That is a big pile of traps!
Care to show off what your set up is? For us new guys...
Anchor, how much chain, how many swivels? Is that a shingle on your pan? I haven't seen that yet on coil spring traps.

| That's not much of a pile. I talked to a good buddy of mine, Mike Kelly, from Minnesota earlier this year about a new pan design for my trap of choice, the MB 550. I told Mike I wanted the same advantages in using a big pan that the longspring guys enjoy. Mike is a great guy and manufactures enlarged pans for mink trappers. Our challenge was that if the pan is too large, it would interfere with the levers, or if it made contact with the levers, the levers would push the pan up when the trap fired. So if a cat tripped the trap, the cat's paw would ride up and out of the jaws . . . . not a good thing. So Mike came up with the idea of using an angle that allows the trap to completely fire before the pan ever makes contact with the levers. Here is what he came up with. The enlarged pan is heavy enough gauge metal that the meanest coyote won't phase it. Just tack weld it in a couple of spots to the original pan, and its done. Now I clean the pan of grease and oil with some solvent, smear a good bit of industrial glue on the pan, apply some corn cob grit, and allow to dry. Then I wax the trap and . . . . ta da!!!! The perfect cat trap for exposed walk through sets (in my humble opinion, of course). As far as the rest of the gear, I like at least three swivels, about 6-7 feet of stout chain, and a nice drag (I'm kind of fond of JC Connor drags). So, no more pan covers for me. No more cutting pan covers; no more bobby pins or paper clips or shelving material; no more fumbling around in the dark trying to find a pan cover. Just set the trap and you're done. | |

I don't know that I do . . . Mr. Comedian. I have all my 450's in the ground for fox usually and the 550 does have a slightly larger jaw spread. But the 450 is a heck of a trap -- I don't think I've ever had anything other than a lion get out of one. The cats I catch with them are usually buried and their foot just seems to fill the trap up. I did weld a few of these same pans to my 450's and they look like they would be a great cat trap. But I usually reserve my 450's for gray fox so I probably won't load up too many of them with the big pans. | |

| Just proves again, there is more than one way to catch a cat (and then skin it). | |

| Here's a video of the trap firing and you can see how the pan stays put, and doesn't ride up on the levers. Another angle. Notice the top of the rod and how little movement there is. | |
