| These 2 were not. They were in thick sage draw and saddle top with big rock pile. I missed a cat this day to because I did not have my stepping stick set up good. Boooooo! That one was hunting willows and brush. Have another spot that there were more tracks in the willows but no cat! Booo again. I must be getting greedy! | |

| That is great Bucks !! On my check today someone decided they needed the Fur in my trap more than me. But hey they left my trap.. I would rather have had the cat.. I found where they pulled their quad in and found their boot tracks right to my set where the critter was bouncing around. I would have chalked it up to a pullout but the drag was not hooked on anything. Then I found the Quad/Boot tracks Too close to the trail I guess ... Live and Learn. Keep up the good work Matt | |

| Bucks great to hear you pulled in a few more kitties. Bullschmidt, I know the exact feeling I have had it happen several times till I started using trail cams. I always hope they get caught in the trap themselves but haven't had it happen. Sorry to hear
Everyone continue on till the end. good luck and bring in the spots

| Yea, it won't be long until the dogs start hatching. I think the earliest I ever found a den was the middle of March. From then in just gets better and better. You can keep and eye out for tracks and use bino's to look for holes they might be cleaning out. Usually they will have the first den where the pups are born and a half a dozen cleaned out holes to move the pups to for either safety or sanitation reasons, so they will be busy cleaning holes about now. | |

| Also, I don't remember if I told you, look for dens on what I call push outs on a hill side that were the hill side is located on the north, north west or north east sides of the hill. Also if you have sage in your area, look for tall sage as that indicates that the soil is deeper and easier to dig. Coyotes will usually dig out an old badger hole where the badger has dug after rodents.

| The first one I found last year was April 26, but it was up about 7,000 feet. When I came back home down here in the valley at 2,800 feet, I called in an entire family group and the pups were traveling and hunting with the adults, so I'm thinking by late March I could find some dens here close to home. I can tell they are sure breeding hard right now. Every two track intersection, old stump, deer crossing and wash/road intersection has tons of kick backs, diggings and turd piles. This week I had a cat trap set off at a wash/two track intersection and when I bent down to reset it, all I could smell was coyote pee. It was so strong that by the time I got the trap set I was about to puke.
Figure 63 days from now and the pups will be on the ground for sure. I can hardly wait. Its almost as exciting as trapping.

| Ridge, good call on the locations. I don't have much sage to speak of here locally but last year I made a foray up into central Nevada where they have a lot of sage. You are exactly right and I remember you saying to look for pockets of tall sage.
I rode along a couple of roads before daylight and howled. At one spot I got a pair to answer me and I could tell by how aggressive they were, they had a den. I marked the spot with a can of orange paint and drew an arrow in the dirt in the direction the sound was. I also wrote "1/2 mile" because that's how far away I thought they were. I came back about 10:00 am (and a hundred miles later) and walked into the area with the dog.
It was pretty thick sage and small rolling humps of loamy soil. I was just getting to the spot where I figured I was getting close and the dog jumped a big jack rabbit. He took off yipping so I hurried and squatted down. Sure enough, off to my right I caught a bit of movement and saw a coyote staring at the dog. I got sat down and turned on the puppy in distress call. The dog heard it and came running back to me and out of this tall sage a big male coyote just T-boned him. Pile driver like. I shot the coyote before it could get on the dog and then the female ran up on a little sand hump and started yapping at the dog so I downed her.
When I stared at the sea of sagebrush to find the den, I was kinda lost and then I remember you saying look at the tall sage so I headed off to a clump that was taller than normal. Sure enough, there was the den and I got the pups.
