Does any one use these traps and if so could you give me any insight? I am looking at possibly building some to experiment with. Size and trigger would be helpfull. I really feel that I can build one for less than what they are advertised at. Really need some help. Thanx

Its great that I have had 30 some people look at this post, but not one person is willing to help. My little girl and I really appreciate it. Trapping is really becoming a dying art. And it seems to me that it is because of our own stupidity and stubbornness. I have always been told that trappers will not give any secrets away, scared that someone else will become better than them, or might catch one more cat or coon than someone else. You can bet that if the price of a good cat was $20 dollars that people would be a little more apt to give some advise and help. I will get off my soap box and apologize for the rant. Just thought the personal agenda was less important than the overall survival of the sport....

Horseroper, I have done quite a bit of cage trapping for skunks and raccoon in the past when I was a government trapper. I've made box traps and not cage traps for my own personal trapping when I was very young. I too believe you could make them for less, but it is hard to gleen that type of info from others sometimes. Of course I always figured of asking who was having good success with cages, finding out who made them, order one and use that as a template to make my own. Just a thought. Also just so you know, for most of us, when an new topic is posted, we are notified via email, and I always go on and read it. I may not respond to it as either I don't know my fanny from a hole in the ground about the topic, or I'm researching out info on the topic or whatever. I've been on this speck of dust for right at 57 years, and this is the only trapping forum I've ever run across that most of the guys are very friendly, helpful and will go out of their way to help you do better and succeed at trapping. All in all they are a great bunch of guys. If you will send me a pm, I will always respond, and since I live in Idaho, I have a few friends that live in Eastern Oregon that might be closer to you and can put you in touch with them. One of them my have a good answer for you and your topic question. Welcome to the forum and I hope we can help each other in the future.

There are some good videos out there. Mercer Lawing is a great cage trapper and might have some insite for you. I have never cage trapped anything except pigeons. I wasn't very good at that either. He has a sight called cagingbobcats.com This might help too?? Good luck.

Double door traps require a lot of labor and time to build. I have made several in the past, both collapsible and solid traps. Any person that can build a quality single door trap can build a double door. There are a lot of places where the double door traps will outperform the single door trap and in your country they would be invaluable. In the states that don't allow snaring the double door traps are great for those places that you would normally set a snare and you don't have to worry about using bait or any lure to attract the animal into the trap. Just place it in a spot that the animal will normally travel and wait for it to walk through the trap. Personally I stay away from the guillotine doors; I do prefer the swing doors. If you have ice in the winter or wind the swing doors will still perform and they are faster dropping down and harder for animals to back out of. Cats don’t jump forward when the door drops like most trappers think that they do. They just stand there and if the door hits them on top of the back, they will just back out of the trap. The lock rings on a swing door are like Chinese finger cuffs and they are more difficult for the animals to escape. Of course this is just my opinion…. I’m sure that there is someone out there that has a direct link to God that will say that my opinion is wrong.

I agree with you bill1306, double doors do have value is some situations, but it seems the single door is the most popular. I guess that is why they build jump, coil and double long spring traps. No one trap is the ultimate answer to all situations. We all must be able to adapt to the situation at hand in order to obtain the results we want to achieve.

Mercer Lawnings video talks about a lot of good things, but he doesn't go into any depth on making traps (he makes and sells traps and doesn't want to cut into his own business I'm thinking). He does have some great success with live traps that cannot be denied. I figure that some information comes with a price, and you won't get that knowledge without paying the price. I believe in this case the information is being sought is the price of a few different traps that are made by these guys that make the big catches. Smile

Hope you find your answers and have some great luck next year. Horseroper, it sucks that you are limited to only 5 cats on the east side of your state. I know from running around through your area that the cat population is healthy enough for either a certain season length with no limit or at the least, higher limits than 5.

Bill and Ridge thanks for your guys time and input. I think i will end up biting the bullet and buying one of both. Advanced traps and a set from Mercer. Then just play with em and see what happens. I do have 3 good cats to sell and will of course reinvest the money back to my habit. I will try to post some pics here in the next couple days. I also got one big ole fur badger but i really like him and gonna tan and keep him. My big tom is 48 inches from tip to base. Not the biggest Ive got but for sure the longest. thanks again guys
