Can anyone tell me why they like to laminate their traps? I absolutely despise it. Noone I have ever talked to has ever given me a good reason to do it. What do you guys think.

Can't see why you would despise it. Laminatining your jaws spreads out the jaw pressure over a larger area. Making your catch more comfortable and less damage to your catch. The more relaxed an animal is in a trap, the better for the animal and the the trapper.

But does it really make the catch more comfortable. When you see a laminated trap, it usually has all the bells and whistles ie 4 coil, basplate, laminations, etc. This makes a trap extremely heavy. In addition it makes more noise. I have been told that coyotes will fight a heavier trap a lot more than a lighter one. This has apparently been proven through research at a college that is actually pro trapping.

Maybe despise is the wrong word.

Set any trap with stock jaws and one with lamination. You will see a big difference.

scheide said it well. No comparison in the two when it comes to foot damage.

The coyotes i have caught have been caught in mb650s and #4 victors. victors are 4 coiled with offset jaws and the mbs are laminated, base plated with offset jaws and 4 coiled. The coyotes all have been lying down when i arrived, very little foot damage. just some fur rubbed off. However i have caught another critter, which had to be released. He fought the trap all nite. Still there was no seriously injury except for some loss of fur.
