| This is the first year that I have not been totally ready to go at the start of the season. I have had too many Irons in the fire to be ready. I did get 3 dozen traps waxed over the weekend and will be going out on Thursday to set some locations. Good luck to everyone this year. | |

| Just a word to the wise . . . I know certain governmental elements monitor these sites all the time, so if you're handing out specific locations, don't be surprised if you get a visit from law enforcement at said locations. Not that anyone is doing anything wrong, but most guys have more productive things to do other than stand around wasting time while they pull down their drawers for LE. Just my opinion, of course. | |

| Moneyspots that is a great pic. Took me a few to find it. Teach you sidewinder you !!!!! What a pretty cat. Good luck to everyone out there. I got a few sets in today and got frustrated not finding any access into some great looking country. I will find a way for sure. The country is too good to leave it like that!!! | |

| That is a great looking Cat teach! I hope I can share some photos from my first check tomorrow. The full moon is almost here and allot of guys swear by it helping their catch. I keep a log of my catches and have never noticed a correlation with a full moon but always remain hopeful. Good Luck Guys! | |

| I caught two coyotes with the new 450's, and the others were caught in mostly 550's. I really like setting those 450's with waxed dirt because I don't use as much dirt! I only made up 25 gallons so I am conserving . | |

| I have been using two pieces of wax paper under trap. Then cover with wax dirt. It saves a lot of wax dirt. Read that in Bill Illchicks? Wild West bobcat book. | |

| Good info Leo. I have been doing the same but am out of wax dirt so I am using table salt...not really a big fan of it to tell you the truth. I am ending up with standing water over my trap. During the Rondy Illchick made a comment about Andy Weisers demo and stated he has had the same problem with calcium chloride. Guess I need to make more wax dirt next year.
Tracy I thought I read somewhere that you use table salt too? Do you have this problem on your grey fox sets with the water?

| Water . . .? Water . . .? What's that? We don't have no stinkin' water . . . we live in the desert.
The problem Ilchik had with Calcium chloride is it gathers moisture. There will be a wet spot on your trap and its extremely corrosive. I like the convenience of table salt; its readily available and a one pound chub will do dozens of sets. Use the wax paper like Bill says under your trap and a little salt on top and you are good to go. Only bad thing about salt is it attracts rabbits, deer and livestock.

| Haha right especially the last 4 years or so! We haven't had a real winter with snow in a while. I remember as a kid hunting deer with snow in late October all the time.... We might have to have a snow day around here if that were to happen again. DOT guys probably don't remember how to plow snow anymore. | |

| Ya, so far for the wet, cold winter with tons of snow! It's may happen still, but it sure has taken its time. Thanks guys for the ideas on water proofing. I had not ever heard of table salt. This is really the first year I have put in many dirt hole and buried flats sets, but I decided to try the sagebrush flats early in the year to pick up coyotes and cats. I remember reading something Joel wrote one time about catching coyotes and cats in the flats and it made me think. I am surprised with the cat sign down in the tall sagebrush flats that I have found. Once I move to the higher rims and drainages I go entirely to exposed sets and don't have to worry about freezing. Hope everyone's first check in the cat season goes well. | |

| Hey teach why not exposed down low? I am assuming you are targeting more than cats down low? When I set out to start my cat line the other day I was totally planning on making sets specific for Coyotes for fun while trapping cats. That was all fine until I made the first cat set. For some reason I couldn't even think about setting for a dog after that. | |

| I think I should go exposed on all of them, but I have a bet with a student on who can catch 15 coyotes first! I've got a bit to go on that. On my remakes I'm going exposed with an attractor thinking that the catch circle will bring in any cats that travel by. I don't kbow, I have a ton to learn on trapping... | |

| I don't know why it wouldn't. IMO the best thing to catch a cat is eye appeal and a trap in the right spot. Of course all the fine smells we throw at them are a plus.
Had a decent first check for me anyway with two cats today. I'm having issues with my phone today and only got pictures of one of them and now can't get them from my phone (p o s casio). Ill try tomorrow.

| I am actually embarrassed to show the first one. The perfect set and perfect cat to step exactly where I wanted it to but there is always that Murphy factor that comes in to play from time to time. The idiot setting the trap tightens the pan bolt too much! Ya the back up set should in theory catch the mistake except that this cat appeared between the sets and is traveling the opposite direction. " /> This helps it not hurt as much, and then the phone dies before I get a pic of the Tom around the corner. Not the prettiest cat. " /> | |

| Way to go moneyspots on the double! Was the cat in the picture a female, it looks like she has some size to her? The paw print on the pan made me think of the Jackpot situation last year, did you check for a rock!! | |

| Ya the cat in the picture is a female. I was going to release her but my daughter begged me to keep it. She does look decent sized in the picture for some reason. She is 36" and the Tom is 40". I set the trap off and fixed the tension. I don't know how I got it that stiff. I set the tension as I set the trap but messed up somehow on that one. Hopefully that's the only overly stiff one I have. | |

| Nice looking cat cameron2 and good job hezzy. I love seeing your pictures with cats caught in creosote and joshuas! We see junipers, sage, and pinyon up here. I set some more bobcat sets with my daughter on Sunday and in the same trip picked up these two. Awesome day getting to spend it with my 10 year old This coyote was caught in a set my daughter and I set last weekend. This male had more fat on him that I've ever seen, fleshing will be fun! | |

I love mine, i am happy i talked to bucks about them. I've caught four coyotes in the 450s and they are buried deep.
