I know. The season is right around the corner and I am scrambling to find some rel-estate. Thought I had an ace in the hole until further investigation yesterday. I cant find anything that hasn't been hammered recently.

On that subject, do you guys have any luck on cats in the places you trapped the previous year? I have never had any in the same places twice.

Oh yeah if the country is big enough and the spot is good you will have them come back every year. Sometimes you will have multiple catches in the same location during the same season. This is just what I have seen?

I have had two locations in the past that produced a cat on the first four checks each (8 cats). I set them again a year or more later with no results. Maybe I should try again.

Nice job moneyspots. Coyotes are fun to catch! I had some guy cut some wood right by a badger catch circle. There were foot prints walking back and forth around it. I am sure he was wondering what the heck happened here. At least my traps were still there, it sucks walking up to a set seeing foot prints and your traps gone.

Here's a couple from today... Picked up 4 more coyotes, the first red of the season and another badger.

The set with the badger has caught 3 badgers and 1 coyote now in the last 4 checks.

Nice job nvsage! Only up date I can give is I am still a novice at coyote trapping. Apparently I have poor trap placement because I have plenty of misses and I am certain the coyotes are laughing at me. And the thief's are laughing too because they got another one of my traps. Come on cat season!

Thanks moneyspots it has been a good season so far. I usually have my pan about 7-9" straight back from the lip of the dirt hole or from whatever I am using as a backing. My dog is always pointed towards the hole anywhere from 9-3 o'clock I don't believe that really matters and where ever I get it to bed well is where it goes. I do use suttle guiding but could be just a pebble sized rock or a peace of grass.

That sucks you keep having people mess with your stuff...nothin else will piss me off more then that. Maybe I can actually pick up a cat or 2 this year as that is where I struggle to connect!!! I actually started coyote trapping because I got tired of checking empty cat sets all the time.

I have same problem moneyspots. Way more misses than catches when they vist sets. They don't always work a set hard and if you don't have pan In just the right spot you miss them by inches. It gets frustrating sometimes but it make you want to catch them more. Someday I might figure this trapping stuff out.

Well I checked today ahead of the thief's and picked up 3 more so it was a good morning. Copy that nvsage on the placement. I was in the ballpark on your specs but have narrowed down some of the problem. I know that I am getting lucky with some dumb coyotes but I have never had this many critters with such little effort. I like it!

Put out a new line yesterday.... Only got about half the # of sets I wanted to put in. Ground is frozen solid around here. Only about a week and a half left of trapping for me. Then I get to live through you guys for the next 3 months.

Tracy your gray line get any better like you had anticipated?

nvsage, I was afraid that the ground would be solid after this last snow/rain and single digit weather. I'm hoping to find time to get a dozen sets out this week after school, but I may just spend the next two weekends prepping for a cat line on the 1st! Awesome pics! Keep them coming!

Couldn't do it without some quality stretchers that's for sure Otis!

Tracy those cage traps look like a ton of work... Was planning on buying a couple of Mercers at the Rondy but spent all my $ on other stuff. Maybe this year.

Not my favorite thing to see!!!! LOL

Both of today's coyotes were in MB450s... The big male broke te dog in half!

You can see the catch circles from last year behind the fox... This spot is a producer!

I remember back when we could trap, I would always save my vacation time to start the 15th of October and go trap for a month in the high country, above 10,000ft. Those badgers reminded me of a morning episode. There was this long drainage, cattle trail in the bottom, full of sage and buckbrush. Heavy dark spruce timber on the sides. We had a fresh snow, maybe 3", and was right at first light. Made the first tracks of the day on that road. I pull up to that location and the warden had followed me in. I looked down in that draw and it looked like Lances badger pic. The game warden says "My God, what do you figure you caught down there?", I said,"well Jim, I either have a pair of D-8 dozers or a pair of badgers". He was shocked they could move so much ground.

coloradocat its funny you mention D8. We have always called them D6s. There is something I love about them.
I pulled my line last night and was left with a parting gift. My buddie and his boy rode along with me. I think his boy asked me close to 1000 questions about trapping. Nothing like taking kids along.

Great story Otis. First check on this ranch and picked up 4 badgers. Sure makes for a lot of clean up work. Caught 17 off of this ranch last year and doesn't look like things are going to be much different this season. The sets after that sure are eye catchers to say the least. Getting ready to put up the critters from yesterday. The one coyote is a stud and can't wait to see what he stretches.

Great picture moneyspots

Agghhhh, you guys are killing me with the pictures! But keep them coming!!!! My fall plans were changed after we (wells FFA) won the state range contest and my students committed to winning nationals. I'm in Vegas this weekend but can't wait to get after it next week. Hoping to catch a few coyotes before December 1. From that day on it will be "all about the cat!"

Beautiful country Leo! Hope you get some sets pounded in teach.... Cat season is right around the corner! Pulled almost my entire line today. Have a couple sets behind the house that I'll leave in and add some more to this weekend. Was going to pull it all but couldn't bring myself to do it lol I am not ready to stop yet!! My little one tagged along again today. Only 1 coyote... But probly the best of the year.

Well I finally put some steel in the ground! 12 sets for coyotes and fox that I picked up on trail cams this fall. I'm giving it two checks then I'm all in for spotted critters. The cool news is I caught two different fresh cats tracks while I was scouting for new sets to put out next week Smile

Moneyspots that is some purrrrdy country there. Did a little scouting for some cat sign myself I had told myself I wasn't going to even try cats this year but here I am itchin to try again!!! Found a little bit of sign but nothing too great... think I will take Matt's advice and set it anyways there are a ton of rabbits in this area and just looks too good not to set.

Teach good luck and hope you catch a couple of critters before the cat season! Went to Salt Lake the other day and man is it hard to keep my eyes on the road too much good cat country around there!

We had a snow storm come through yesterday and it put down about two to three inches depending on where you were. Those pictures were from Mountain Lion Springs. It is low (5,500 feet) private ground around some hay meadows. The catch circles should encourage a bobcat to come in for a look!

I know, right!!! I'm only trapping 5-10 miles from my house now, so I get to hit it every night after school until I get my lines set out. Too bad you had some idiots help themselves to your hardware; my worries go up later in the year when I move to BLM land. Good luck on the cats!

I noticed that Bobcat Peak had some snow, the storm must not have gotten further south?  Have you spent much time in that area?  Last year it was hit by a few long liners from Fallon and Lovelock, I figure they will give it a go for a few weeks. I know of one one guy from Lage's that used to hit it, but I may give it a run over Christmas break.
