Well I enjoyed the "started" thread from last season, so I figured I would get it started again. I always get a Thank You card for all of the people that let me trap there places and give it to them when I go and renew my permission to trap there again. I caught 17 badgers in 2.5 weeks for one rancher and that will be my in for years to come with him. Anyways hope everyone is having a good summer and will see some of you at the Rendezvous and the CAB meetings.

That's a great idea and a nice looking card. I am sure the land owners appreciate the predator management.

Thanks guys.
Today had my girls helping me out. Taking all my 4 coils off my 550s and cutting spring for the 4 coil. Tried to just bend them last year and still had some get caught up. Still have a bunch to clean up and a couple dozen 450s to put my chain set up on, j-hooks to weld, etc the list goes on. I enjoy tinkering so it's all good! Smile

I finally have a system down where I am not wasting time with stuff I don't use during the season. I have everything standardized now helps speed things along for sure. Give the girls a pressure washer and hope for the best lol. They love to help me out in the garage.... Not sure the last time was I made a swivel. They keep asking me if it's time to go trapping yet. Good friend of mine gave me a dozen B&L #1s so I am going to make some boxes for mink and ermine for the girls. They will have a blast with them!

On my way to work for the night stopped in the garage and shook up some coyote glands. They seem to be breaking down really well. I have never really messed with glands but saved what I could from my coyotes this year. Should I leave as is? Add lanolin? Glycerine?

What's everyone else up to? Getting things ready... What do you guys do in off season to get ready for the next season?

How about pan covers? What do you guys use? I have used shelfliner which worked ok but the holes are too big and first bit of moisture pan cover would show. Last year I used O'Gormans steel screen and worked good. This year I am going to try just plain ol wax paper. Any thoughts?

Don't know how it might work in your area but last year I sprung and got a trappers cap for my 550's from MTP and I really liked it. I am modifying some other pipe for my Paws-I-Trip pans to see how that will work. Just my 2 cents.

Weather has been rainy here for the last week... Don't get me wrong we need the moisture but makes it tough to get out to much. I was reading a thread on Lynx Lair by Cameron2 about reviewing DVDs and books again as season grows near. He lit a fire under me so I have been watching a couple DVDs while the weather is so rainy. Just got done watching John Graham's 6 days with a long liner and Bob Wendts on the dog line. Also started reading Big O's Hoof Beats of a Wolfer again. Man Tracy you are right I have picked up a couple new things that I never caught or understood before! Also order Wendts fox DVD to check it out. Thanks Tracy.

Lance:

Glad you got back from the Rondy safely. With that haul of loot you had I was nervous that bandits might try to ambush you. Of course, you had 4-5 guns you had won and a half ton of ammo so you were probably able to fend them off.

Hey, the other off-season activity that is essential is time spent on GoogleEarth. I've logged a ton of time on past traplines and potential traplines without ever leaving home. Whether you are a canine trapper looking for stock ponds, trails, access roads, pinch points or even just wondering what the neighboring landowner's place looks like, GE is essential. Its also a great tool to find rock piles, ledges, and other good cat spots. Check it out.

Heck I felt lucky to just make it out of Ely! lol Everyone I sold tickets to that won were very happy as well.... Especially the guy that won the bath and body works lotion.

Tracy your book is on my list to read again. Not sure if it was your book or DVD that mentioned google earth but I have used it so much since then. I like to look for heavily used game trails and cattle trails for my coyotes. Also good to find guzzlers, little hidden springs an I have even used it to just find roads an try to plot out my loop... Or see if I can even make a loop.

I use google earth all the time for the last 5 or 6 years. It can show you a lot, but the terrain is a lot more radical than it shows. It is a good way to find roads, trails, and such.

Trimble outdoors has a cool app that has Google earth, but you can over lay topo map with satellite map at same time. You can also adjust the maps to show more satellite or more topo. It really make Google earth better when you can tell how rugged the terrain is.

Well just got done getting all of my jhooks welded on all of my traps. I cut 7" off of all my chain set ups so now I am about 12 inches from base to last swivel. Hoping this will mean less clean up when it comes to badgers. Adjusted pan tension, replaced bent dogs and tested every trap. Only thing left to do before the end of October is dye, wax and then make some wax dirt.
Been seeing a lot of pups hit on the side of the road so coyotes are on the move for sure. Lots of flies and haven't seen a humming bird at the house in over a week.... Falls is on it's way. Anyone else getting ready? I know I am getting the itch!

We went to our sons Soccer game in Winnemucca yesterday and there was a lot of run over coyotes on the way there. I think it will be a cold wet long winter. ( I sure hope ) Yeah have been scouting new country for cats this year. Itchy is an understatement !!!!

Funny you say that NVSage because it is not far off the road just had to work to find the access to it. Old hard to see 2 track. Nice thing is even when we get snow it won't be too obvious where I am going. Got some more country close need to look at too!

Well pretty much have everything ready to roll. Traps are dyed and waxed, made about 150 high desert spears, changed tires on trailer for quad, welded up a holder for my gas on the trailer, did some prebaiting, put out some trail cameras and made wax dirt today. Only made about 70 gallons and will try and get another 70 gallons made up tomorrow.

Anyone else ready to put traps in the ground? Bucks I know you gotta be getting close? LOL

I FINALLY dyed, waxed, and adjusted my MB's. I also retrofitted two dozen Victor #3 cool springs with PAWS I TRIP pans. Man do they make those traps nice! I'm itching so much to plant some iron, I may set a few traps for the coyotes that keep killing my neighbors chickens Smile. With the cold weather Elko county has had, I would think they should be getting close to ready. I just looked at the precip forecast for October, November and December. It showed about average for north eastern nevada so I guess we will see?

Coyotes are a lot easier to catch than people make them out to be. IMO To much over thinking I think. All you gotta do is be on location. When I started trapping coyotes I looked at it from calling stand point. Called a lot of coyotes and when I first started trapping I would look at an area and say if I called this area where would the coyote come from and how would he come into the stand. Set those spots and had really good luck.

Well got some time and went out to try and find some chuckar. Walked my butt off and didn't see a single bird. Saw some deer,a big ole coyote and found a little forkin horn shed. It's was good to get my other girl out again.... It had been too long.

Walked up from the creek down on bottom right of picture.

Well I did go and make a couple Coyote sets with no luck on any of them yet I did pick up my first ever Red Fox tonight. Sorry no pictures. I thought getting even a few sets out would scratch the itch some, but with a small taste of fur now in my mouth all that happened was it poured more fuel on the fire to go big.

We'll I have got some coyote sets out and will check Friday with the kids since they don't have school. Saw some really good sign and set some new locations. Should make for a good first check. Pulled my trail cams.... My scoutgaurd messed up and didn't get any pics off of it. But did get a picture of this lion. Looks like a big Tom! The coyote is just a comparison in size to this big cat. Good luck to all as cat season is right around the corner!

Nice catches guys, I'm jealous. So last Sunday I finally got a small line of twenty sets out for Coyotes. My first ever coyote attempt (except for the three i set for a week last month and picked up a red). I checked today and recovered 2 that should of been 4, except for the double I had was clearly stolen traps and all. Only thing left was catch circles and boot tracks. I have never lost any traps before to thief's and can't explain the fury in side me. One thing that made me feel a little better was a guy I talked to walking his dog up the road. I stopped to warn him that I had traps in the area and didn't want his dog to get tangled up. It was a surprise to me when he complied and asked me where I didn't have traps so he could run his dog somewhere else. I got to talking to him and it turns out he is an old trapper from Missouri and paid his way through school trapping. The part that was good was the story he told me of when he caught someone that had taken one of his traps. He found it in the back of the guys truck and waited on the tail gate until he came out of the bar. The guy came out and he beat the guy with the trap until the cops showed up. The cops investigated it and took the beat up thief to jail. I have some pictures but havent quite figured out how to post them yet.

Trap long enough and it happens to us all partner. Still doesn't stop the sting and anger it leaves behind. Game trail camera just off road coming in to your area works too.
