The anti trapping bill is out!!

Please go to the Legislative webpage http://www.leg.state.nv.us then go to the right side of the page to "share your opinion". Pick SB213 and vote AGAINST!! If you post comments keep them professional. We want them to vote our way!!

While you're at it vote FOR SJR7, and AGAINST SB82.

It would be great if you would send a personal email the Senate Natural Resource Committee as well, especially Chairman Ford. He's a good guy

Is it legal in NV for fur trappers to use "poisoning devices"? They used the same tactics in NM where it's not even legal to use poison to kill fur-bearers.

Good scare tactic. I tried to share my opinion but I'm not a NV resident.

I am not sure that you can use pois0n on furberers? Used to be able for coyotes long time ago. Thanks for the input and trying to help fellow trappers out!!! Where you from devildog??

Can't use poison under Federal law.

I'm not sure this is a poke at the government trappers (because they are licensed to use poison) or just sloppy drafting by the antis.

It's really important for our southern trappers to post their opinions on SB213. I can't see Settlemeyer or Goicoechea voting yes, and I am sure they have heard from their constituents. It seems most of the push for this bill is coming from the Vegas area. It never hurts to call the office of the senators to voice your opinion as well- that is on the NTA website as well. I made the statement that it would help if they made the consequences more severe for multiple trap check offenders. Not sure how everyone else feels, but if someone can't check their traps on time, and has been fined five times- maybe they shouldn't be trapping.

Thanks for your help guys. Its good to see the support we get across the state.

Someone said the antis seem to be concentrated in the south . . . I don't think that's the case. Trailsafe, NoBear Hunt, Moldy Mouldy and the rest of them are all northerners. I don't think the south has a monopoly on the madness. :-)

The government trappers can still use sodium cyanide in an M-44. This device is very useful in areas where the winters are cold and the ground is frozen. It used to be that you could place 12 of these devices in a square mile area, but I believe that now they can only place 4 in a square mile. These are very good tools, but extreme care has to be used as if you are setting one and it is tripped, the sodium cyanide is projected out in a fine powder form and if inhaled, will encapsulate the red blood cells that carry oxygen to your brain and you will suffocate. All you will see of these devices is a small inch to inch and a half object that is about an inch and a half high. There will be some sort of cloth or wool wrapped around the outside of what is called the head. The top center of the device is where the sodium cyanide is expelled when the device is pulled in an up-ward motion, and into the animals mouth. The coyotes usually never travel farther than 50 yard from the device and die once they have pulled it.
I've used hundreds of these when I worked as a government trapper, and they are a good tool, but I don't believe that anybody except a government trapper should use them. They are highly regulated and you have to get trained and pass a test to use them. I know a few trappers that I would not want using them as their ethics are not where they should be to use a device such as this (my opinion only). Oh, and by the way, you have to carry an antidote kit with you in case you get contaminated by the sodium cyanide, and I've heard that the after effects are quite unpleasant.

I don't know whether they actually use them or not . . . I know I have seen the antidote kits in their rigs so I imagine they use them. But I'm sure its in a limited area and for a limited time.

I've been real fortunate to be able to hang out with the government trappers from time to time and I have to say I've always been impressed with what a hard working, focused group they are as a whole. I'm sure like any other group they have their bad apples but the guys I've been able to see in action understand how to use all the tools at their disposal (traps, snares, dogs, choppers, getter guns, calling, etc.) and try to use the right tool for the right job. I even know one that has a specially made extra long barrel shotgun (I'm talking 6 feet long) that is almost subsonic for use in calling coyotes in urban neighborhoods. They used specialized tools because every problem requires a different approach. We private trappers could learn from their approach. For example, when I trap fox its usually been a real simple dirt hole with one or two options for bait and two options for lure. I slap sets in fast and furious because I want to cover a lot of ground. Generally the plan works, but last year I used a couple specialized sets with a different bait and lure option and was amazed at how many more critters I picked up. Its a balance between speed and efficiency on the one hand, and a little creativity and specialization on the other hand. But if you can get that balance, your fur check will increase dramatically.

Cameron2, you're right about the use of the M-44's (older version was the getter). In the area of my district, I could only use them from November to the end of February. I believe the reason for the focus of the govt. trapper is that usually they are after a killer, or a specific animal. They just want to stop the damage that is occuring. While doing that, they will of course catch others, but hopefully the target they are after. As a fur trapper, you are after all of them. Unless you are trapping for a rancher or livestock owner, you (and I do it too now) are after numbers. Numbers are what puts money in the bank. Low catch, not much money. When trapping for the government, I used a lot of interesting sets that took quite a bit of time to construct, that I don't use now when trapping for fur. I never had a 6 foot long barreled shotgun though. I did have some interesting equipment for night calling though.

R740:

The cattle and deer proof sets that I discussed in the thread "Tips & Tricks" were two that I used this year with good success. I had a couple places in mind where the soil conditions were just right and there were lots of fox so I went out before the season and got the holes dug, then put juniper branches over them until I was ready to set traps. The fox just loved to work them and it was something new they weren't accustomed to seeing so it added a bit of a curiosity factor as well.

I put myself through college trapping fur in the winter and trapping coyotes for the sheepmen in the summer. TOTALLY DIFFERENT trapping altogether. I sure learned a lot. Critters react completely different in the summer vs the winter or fall. That first spring and summer was a real humbling experience, trying to catch a specific coyote in a specific pasture of 4-5,000 acres. I was in way over my head but I got it figured out. Fence snares became my best new friend. Then I got trail snares figured out and it became a whole new world.

Baits and lures were a whole new experience as well. The old tried and trusted lures or baits that worked wonders in the fall/winter were worthless in the summer -- they either evaporated over night, were carried away by ants, or attracted herds of deer/sheep/cows/horses/dogs or rabbits. Fetid baits weren't worth the time it took to get them in the ground.

I remember my most humbling experience. A sheep man had a high pasture (about 9,500 feet elevation) and it rained up there nearly every day during the summer. We had to horseback into the canyon where the killing was taking place. I found a trail with good sign and some fresh droppings on it so I spent an innordinate amount of time making a couple of subtle flat sets. I was showing the rancher how and why I was making these sets where I was and so forth . . . feeling pretty full of myself. He just watched me. Just as I stood up from completing the second set, a bolt of lightning split the air and it started to rain. I mean really rain. We got the horses under some nearby tree just up the trail from my two sets. After just a few moments we watched as the trail became a small river and my two traps were flushed right out of their beds and carried to the end of their chains. Almost as soon as it started, the rain ended. The rancher walked over to the two traps, now lying completely on top of the ground naked as a jaybird. The rancher looked over his shoulder at me and asked, "Now tell me again young feller, why was it you was settin' these traps here?"

Trapping can be a very humbling experience at times. I once made a shot on a coyote on the run with a 22-250 that was out at over 500 yards. The rancher thought I was the best shot he had ever seen. The next week when the rancher was with me, I missed one at 100 yards and this one was just trotting along. He looked at me like what the h*** happened? Trapping can be that same way, "Sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you're the bug." You are so right about coyote habits at different times of the year. I would have sometimes a two to three week period that I couldn't catch a coyote, and other times when you couldn't keep them out of your traps.

Yes, the Senate Natural Resources Committee had its work session on SB 213. Generally they don't take any testimony during a work session, they just vote on bills. In this case, they voted to approve trap registration and to send visitation to the NAC (meaning the Wildlife Commission will be able to decide it, but included language that the WC had to consider proximity to urban populations, etc. when determining visitation). The rest of the bill got trashed. So . . . . the bill now goes over to the Assembly where we get to argue only those two issues -- registration and visitation. If you know anyone in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee now is the time to talk to them and let them know that they should reject registration. The visitation part scares me. On the one hand, I would rather have visitation decided by the WC because although the current Commission (let me choose my words carefully here) has shown an inclination to accept a much more restrictive view of trapping, we have a better chance there than in the legislature.

The part that scares me (other than the fact the current WC has restricted trapping more than any other WC in the history of the state) is that the bill sort of suggests the WC to do something about visitation. I'm concerned they will do just what they did with SB 226 where they went way above and beyond what was required of the bill -- they shut down a great deal of Mt. Charleston to trapping when SB226 didn't even suggest that; they formed a "Trapping Committee" to study possible regulations for trapping AND REFUSED TO PUT A TRAPPER OR ANYONE WHO KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT TRAPPING ON THE COMMITTEE.

We don't really have a lot of leverage on the WC (we don't elect them like the legislature), so really I think the campaign we have to start working on right now is with the Governor. I believe we need to start sending a message to him through whatever channels we have that if he intends to run again in 2 years, he is going to lose the sportsmen's vote if he doesn't control the WC. He already appointed Karen Layne, the President of the Las Vegas Humane Society, to the WC and drew the ire of sporting families statewide. Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter. Sorry to ramble so much.
