hooked a cat lastnight but can not find it. It was caught with a 1.65 4 coil bridger with a regular hook drag.
In your guys vast experience which way do they usually travel?
Thanks for your help.

I don't use drags but my old man always has and when with him I always noticed they went down hill. Go back early in the morning with a spot light till you see eyes....if legal in your state. We can check traps with lights as long as you don't shoot the animal that is caught. They must be dispatch in other ways.

This is why I quit using drags. I feel your pain lost a cat for 2 days one time. Took my lab and she found him. Hard to say which way they go? If you have weight on the drag I would say down for sure. My cat broke the rock headed down then went back up and got tangled up about 20ft from original set. Crazy huh!!!

Generally they go down hill. They will usually follow the path of least resistance. If you have some heavy brush cover close by, check it out as they will most times head into it for safety and to hide. I've used hook drags quite a bit, and have only lost 4 or 5 in 40 years of trapping. The idea of taking a dog and letting them find it for you is a good one. Found a lot with a cattle dog that belonged to my wife that I couldn't find on my own.

Dog for sure. They go up too. Look for chain, in rocks and brush. Found one of mine that the cat had escaped from, dog won't find that trap. A friend advised using some ribbon on the drag and chain. Works.

Ive had them go both ways. Usually if i found them they made like a circle pattern and weren't far from original spot. I have lost a few that i could not track. Definitely use a dog if u can.

Thanks for the info guys.
But today I was checking in the same area that I lost the trap and drag in, and I hiked up to a bolder to set a few more sets. When I crawled under a tree next to the boulder to level out the set I looked up to see some big ol' eyes looking at me. Talk about scare the crap out of a guy.
My cat, trap, and drag were about a foot from my face.
I will try and get some pics on the forum.
Once again thanks for your comments.
