I am a novice trapper in central oklahoma! I am having issues with cats not setting of the traps even if they step on the kill! I dont think im setting the pans too heavy but I hate to hair trigger them! I know of 3 cats that I have had in the sets and the trap never fired! I am in sandy ground and am wondering if maybe even though im using pillow stuffing under the pans if the sand is blocking the pan from going down far enough to trigger! Ive dug up the traps that this is happening with and they seem to fire correct! will a cat step on a non covered pan? or am i dealing with ghost cats that dont way anything? Its getting old really fast and I am in need of knowledge!! thanks in advance!!! I am using duke #3 and #1 1/2.

It may help if you use a lite file on the dog and notch. Make sure the travel is clear and free. I always use wax paper for a pan cover also.

If you are using hollow fill under the pan, make sure that the hollow fill is sticks out just past the pan on all sides. This will allow compression of the pan into only the hollow fill.

I trap where the weather is pretty cold, and the wax paper will draw moisture and freeze. Poly fill or hollow fill will allow the rain to drain through or moisture to evaporate back up from the dirt below the trap and I don't have sets freezing up. Experiment with different things, and use what works best in the area you trap.

K thx ridgeback! It isnt really cold here yet but I just feel like to get enough fill under the pan to go past the edges makes the kill too stiff! I reset most of my sets this morn after checking because we have a cold front coming in and I hope they will be on their feet and moving! Ill do some experimenting!! thanks and good luck!!!

Try the out west set? Above ground walk through set. You can crowd them by stuff. Like a stump or old tires. Little ice melt under the set and around works well for all situations. Try small pan cover with what ever dirt your in lightly sprinkled on top. Trigger your pan and notch the dog. Set for 3-4 lbs with a quick short drop in the pan to fire. I use the polly fill to attract them in. I am sure your totally confused because I am now tooo!! HA HA. Might have to send you pics.
