Rockchuck for Bait? Empty
PostSubject: Rockchuck for Bait?   Rockchuck for Bait? EmptyThu Apr 05, 2012 12:34 am

I've never tried rockchucks for bait, and was wondering if anyone had? I'm plagued with them where I live. They eat on stuff in the garden, the wife's flowers and graze on the lawn when the dare venture that close to the house. I've been live trapping them and then disposing of the bodies when I revoke their license to reside at my place. I know that I skinned one out one time and it was a fat grease ball of an animal, so not sure about them being a good bait. If they are, I'd like to use 4 or 5 of them as a call station in an area where I can move a hundred yards out and gang set snares.

Year before last I used rockchuck for bait and it worked as well as any on the k-9s. I skinned, gutted and ground them up. After I got enough I tainted the meat and stabilized it with salt.

They remind me of a very small pig. Lots of fat! I skinned one out once and it was a butterball with fat. I've found when making a meat based lure, I don't want much fat in it as it doesn't seem to decay as well or as fast as I like to the point that I want it. With the population of them I have where I live, and I'm talking just on my property, I could probably fill up a 55 gal. barrel with them. I'll bet I have over a hundred on my place alone. I live in the city limits, so shooting them is out of the question, so I'm using havahart live traps that were given to me to catch them. Just about any green vegatable will work for bait, but I know they prefer anything I grow in the garden to the bait in the trap.
