PostSubject: Question for guys using cages for cats   Sat Apr 23, 2011 9:54 pm

I used cages for the first time this last winter with some success but I also run into some problems that I am trying to figure out a solution for. I built my own traps with a swing down door, I missed two cats and maybe more because a small branch got thru the wire and stopped the door from going all the way down. I check for this after I got them set and brushed up and never seen the branchs so I am thinking they settled there after getting snowed on or the wind blew brush around enough for them to work thru the wire.

I have looked and only seen one referance to anyone using a canvas cover over there cages. That was someone in colorado that was using it on double door cages. I have found some water proof camo that will work great for in the sage brush and some for the cedars I set in.

Does anyone use a cover to help ellimate the problem of branchs stopping the door or to just help winterize them?

Will a cover be a detrament because they won't allow the wind to disperse the lures as well as just being brushed up which allow the wind to past thru the trap?

When you use brush around the trap it keeps the cat a certain distance from the trap, If the trap just has this cover on and the cat goes around it to investigate the smells will it be able to get close enough to the sides or back to satisfy his curiosity?

I believe using these covers will speed up set time and which will allow me to run more traps and will help elliminate any snow getting in around the pan which I did have this past winter. With the camo pattern I believe it will give me more set locations that I didn't set this past winter because of no trees or brush to put trap in or under. I think with this pattern I can place this trap right in a fence line and catch cats that went thru last winter.

i built a few of my own this year with pull cords atached to the bait and that was where it was at for me. i cant speak for the covers myself. give them a shot and see how they work.

My partner and I just use a black garbage sack. covers the top and a few inches down the side. brushed in the cubbies look great. sure helps with keeping the pan working. We brush our cages in tight so that the cat has to approach from the open door to satisfy his curiosity. initial set time is the same but it sure speeds up remakes and makes pulling the line a lot easier as the cage isn't solidly frozen down. we had cats work the sides and back on cages set this way so I am sure the scent is getting through the sides of the cage fine. hope this helps.

You could use the black weed barrier cloth, less rattle, big rolls and pre cut before you head out.

The problem with using the black stuff instead of camo is it would be easier to see and more suseptable to theft. The camo cloth does cost a bit more but they should last for years if taken care of so the investment wont be that much over time. I apperciate all the input from everyone. thank you

Not really, you camo with limbs, brush and grass and never had a problem.
Each to his own devices.

I use burlap on my cages and leave about 3 to 4 inches of open wire on the sides and back. Had no problems with this and they blend in well in the areas where I set them.
